The Chapada Diamantina, a surprising and unforgettable trip
A charming mountain atmosphere, excellent service and efforts to maintain sustainability, make the Chapada Diamantina the main destination for ecotourism and adventure tourism in the country. Nature worked her best in making this extensive area a beautiful wonderland. An incredible amount of trails will lead you to crystal clear pools of dark water, rivers, waterfalls, rapids, boulders, lookouts, valleys, caves and caverns with unique formations, blue lakes and plenty of places to go rafting and an extaordiary rich biodiversity that goes from pockets of dense rain forests and everything in between until the semi-arid rugged terrain of the Brazilian northeast where specimens of practically unknown flora and fauna can still be observed. Here you can see ancient rock formations beauiful beyond description. You’ll see why so many famous photographers come here to try to decipher such mysteries. In order to protect and conserve this natural marvel, the Chapada Diamantina National Park was created in 1985. With an area of 152,000 hectares (586 square miles), the park encompasses the towns of Lençóis, Palmeiras, Andaraí, Itaetê and Ibicora.
Outdoor activities such as hiking, rock climbing, diving, spelunking (cave exploring) and rafting raise the adrenaline level of the tourists as they explore the park. At the end of every adventure there is always an inviting river or waterfall just waiting to provide a free massage.
The Chapada Diamantina is known for its natural beauty, but it also offers history and culture for those who want more. Come listen to the legends and stories that the first inhabitants of the area, the prospectors, keep alive as they recount the days when the precious diamonds ruled.
